Champion Rate crowned a great day of Pegas



DS Pegas (owned by Mr. Jiří Trávníček) completely dominated the Sunday on June 28 in Chuchle Arena Prague. Its representatives won three races, including both top items of the program. The popular 6yo dark bay Black Canyon won 71st May Stakes in front of his stablemate Sagar and 3yo champion Rate won Czech 2000 Guineas. Both stars of Pegas improved historical record times on a fast but quite flexible and very well-prepared track.

Rate (4:5 fav.) certainly triumphed by a length and three quarters in Czech 2000 Guineas (Class A, 1m, 600 ths. CZK, 3yo c+f) in the new record of the race and the track 1:35,53. His jockey Milan Zatloukal and stable owner Jiří Trávníček achieved their third victory in this race, trainer Čestmír Olehla won this race for the first time. Milan Zatloukal reached the fifth classic win, Jiří Trávníček and Čestmír Olehla already the thirteenth. The silver medal was taken by the filly Zariyannka (5:1), ran only for second time in her life, the third place went to the Czech 1000 Guineas winner Eternity (8:1).

In the 71st May Stakes (Class A, 1m, 150 ths CZK, 4yo+) the winner of the Austrian Derby 2017 Black Canyon (7:1), also led by jockey Milan Zatloukal, easily advanced by four lengths in a time of 1:35,75. At that moment, it was not only a new record of the race, but also of the track, as the best mile time in the history of Chuchle Arena Prague, but it lasted only a few tens of minutes before it was surpassed by Rate. Black Canyon recorded the eighth win of its rich career, DS Pegas represented also the second placed Sagar (9:1). Only by a neck third finished sprinter-champion Mr Right (14:1). The winning team wrote up to the roll of winners for the first time, Black Canyon became the sixth horse in history, the first in forty-four years, to complete a hattrick from the traditional Pragues' spring great races (April Stakes, May Stakes, June Stakes).

Owner Jiří Trávníček and trainer Čestmír Olehla won a total of three races during the day, jockey Milan Zatloukal, the Swiss champion 2016, achieved the 43rd double of his career.
